Alex Sarkisian in the Artic Circle
Alex Sarkisian (Art Studio/TCS Major, B.A. 2012, MFA Glasgow
School of Art 2014) has been selected to participate in this
years’ Arctic
Circle 2015: Summer Solstice Expedition.
Every year The Arctic Circle program brings together a group of international artists, scientists and educators to explore, create and collaborate in the remote setting of the Arctic Circle while living on a Barquentine sailing vessel.
Alex was inspired to apply to this residency after she “participated in the summer Advanced Drawing course in 2011. That year a group of students including myself, under the instruction of Robin Hill, stayed and worked at McLaughlin Natural Reserve and Bodega Bay Marine Reserve. I found both locations very inspiring, and the class constructive and motivating. It provided me with the time and space to make a considerable body of new work and to achieve artistic development. The experience encouraged me to spend time at the Sweeney Granite Mountain Desert Reserve on an independent study later that year. The Advanced Drawing course had a huge impact on the direction of my art education and career. I used the majority of the work I made that summer in my application for graduate school, resulting in my acceptance to the MFA program at Glasgow School of Art, which I completed in June 2014. I have now been invited to participate in The Arctic Circle 2015: Summer Solstice Expedition, a residency I applied to in light of my great experience on the Advanced Drawing course.”
