Alum in new show exploring 1960s arts scene in Northern California
“Nuts and Who’s: A Candy Store Sampler,” the new exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Art, focuses on the 1960s arts scene in Northern California and the cross-fertilization of ideas between Funk, Nut, and the Hairy Who in the Bay Area and at the Candy Store Gallery from 1968 to 1985.
Bringing in artists from San Jose Museum of Art’s permanent collection, “Nuts and Who’s” brings together works by many artists who contributed to a regional style and attitude at the Candy Store, including UC Davis artists Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, William T. Wiley, Maija Peeples-Bright (M.A., ‘65), Tony Natsoulas (M.F.A., ‘85), David Gilhooly (M.A., ‘67), and Peter VandenBerge (M.A., ‘63), as well as Luis Cruz Azaceta, Clayton Bailey, John Buck, Irving Marcus, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Franklin Williams, Karl Wirsum, and others.
