The Visual Logic Informing Informal Gardens in China and Europe
Marty Powers, Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan and Professor in the School of Arts, Peking University, will present a a public lecture examining garden design in 18th century Europe and China and intergroup dynamics.
The history of garden design in 18th century Europe can be viewed through the changing relationship between between classes and intergroup relations. Competing models of intergroup relations and concepts of authority which originated in Europe and China were viewed as in competition with each other. These competing understandings of intergroup relations and the negotiations between these differing conceptions informed 18th century European garden design.
