Course Description

Royal Drawing School

Each year, UC Davis offers four students scholarships – Manetti Shrem International Scholarships — to attend the Royal Drawing School’s Drawing Intensive program during the fall quarter. The Royal Drawing School aims to raise the standard and profile of drawing through teaching and practice. At its core is the belief that drawing is crucial for all aspects of visual learning.

This opportunity is open to all UCD seniors who have their degrees by Spring 2024, and recently graduated Art Studio majors.

Term dates are September 23 – November 30, 2024 in London, and November 30 – December 13, 2024 at Dumfries House in Scotland.

To enroll in the program, students take four daytime classes and one evening class. When students are in class, art materials are provided. There are shared studio spaces outside of the class studio off campus, and students working independently in these studios are asked to provide their own art making materials. There will be an RDS Academic advisor available to help UC Davis students select classes according to individual interest and help navigate the enrollment system. The RDS will also provide housing referrals, and an orientation upon arrival.

The residency is a twelve-week commitment, ten weeks in London with classwork at the RDS and two weeks at Dumfries House in Scotland. In Scotland shared housing and studio space are provided but students are responsible for travel expenses, food, and art materials. While at Dumfries House, individual tutorials continue with faculty at the RDS.

The Manetti Shrem International Scholarship covers all tuition and fees to the Royal Drawing School. All other expenses including travel to London and Scotland and return, housing in London and food, and art supplies for work outside of the RDS classes itself will be the responsibility of the student. Students should plan to arrive in London one week prior to classes.

Each award is a $3000.00 (three-thousand dollar/us) stipend.

Apply dates April 11 to May 10, 2024, 5 p.m. GMT. Inquires at the Royal Drawing School can be directed to Janet Casey. Read more about accommodations here.
