Professor Watenpaugh discusses Survivor Objects
Professor Heghnar Watenpaugh will present a public lecture at the Getty Center Research Institute on cultural heritage and genocide. In “Survivor Objects and Captive Sites: Art and Cultural Heritage in Genocide,” Watenpaugh will discuss how the genocidal process, specifically as it relates to the Armenian Genocide, extends beyond the physical extinction of the targeted community to include the erasure, appropriation, or transfer of the community’s cultural assets. Her lecture will consider the implications of genocide with the processes of making sites into patrimony and objects into museum pieces. It reflects on extinction and transformation into art and what this portends for art history and museums in the 21st century.
Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 4 pm – 5 pm at The Getty Center and Online
This lecture will be livestreamed and made available on the Getty Research Institute’s YouTube channel after the event.
