Professor Cortez’s traveling volcano arrives at EMPAC

Ilopango, the Volcano that Left journeyed from the Storm King Art Center to the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, NY earlier this week, taking the scenic route up the Hudson River. Professor Beatriz Cortez’ time-based installation motored up the Hudson on fireboat John J. Harvey, stopping along the way at various spots for public viewing. Ilopango’s arrival was met with a welcome gathering at the Federal Lock and Dam in Troy.

The nomadic steel volcano, inspired by the Tierra Blanca Joven super eruption in what is now El Salvador in the mid-first millennium CE, began its journey in France when Cortez was in residence at the Atelier Calder. Ilopango then traveled to her Los Angeles studio. From there it was shipped to the Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY where it was on view outdoors until Oct. 27. This past Friday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 29, Ilopango’s performative journey stopped in Troy where it will be on view until Nov. 18 at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for their show “Shifting Center.” An opening will take place on Friday, Nov. 3 from 6-10 pm (EST).
