Jason Engelund at MOPA
A work by alumnus Jason Engelund (MFA 2013) has been acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego.
The Sun Never Sets, 3 was prominently featured in the triennial exhibition “Boundless: A California Invitational 2017.” Speaking about the group exhibition the museum’s Executive Director and chief curator Deborah Klochko states “The work is boundless in its approach. These artists are pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible in the medium of photography… It is leading a global dialogue on the redefinition of the medium.”
Engelund describes his artwork and process: “Abstracting the photographic image to the boundaries of representational recognition brings the viewer an opportunity for visceral interpretation. By creating images that surpass an analytical viewing, and instead use a visceral experience, the image approaches a core element of photography, perception and cognition, vision and experience. From there it is a collaboration with the viewer. My compositions are created with the aim of evoking in the viewer deeper ruminations by using metaphorical and conceptual aspects of landscape.”
