Alum in group show at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
Alum Hong Chun Zhang (M.F.A., ‘2004) will present a new work in a group show inspired by the global spirit of Kansas City at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. The World in Kansas City showcases the global community of Kansas City as it invites international visitors to it’s region for the 2026 World Cup. The World in Kansas City opens Mar. 6 and runs through August 9th, 2026.
In May, the Mulvane Art Museum will present a 30 year survey of Hong’s work. Journey to the West examines the trajectory of Zhang’s artistic practice. Drawing from her technical foundation, personal experiences, and social observations, her paintings and drawings have explored topics from gender to cultural differences, environmental concerns, and political issues. Her richly detailed art balances the universal and the particular to invite conversations about identity, family, memory, and social connection. Journey to the West opens on May 29 and will be on view to Oct. 10, 2026. The Mulvane Art Museum is located at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
