Pinewood Vortex, a collaboration between Kristin Hough (MFA ‘16) and Faith Sponsler (MFA ‘17), began with an impulse to widen the scope of who makes and shows land art, a field traditionally male dominated. Hough and Sponsler, two artists with individual practices, came together to create this earthwork, and are now exhibiting documents and products about Pinewood Vortex at the Windmill Library Gallery in Las Vegas.

Pinewood Vortex has two parts: a multiple site-specific installations made in a rural town near Mt. Shasta, CA, and products that reflect, celebrate and satirize those sites. These products include brochures, hats and keychains – much like the souvenirs found in a roadside attraction’s gift shop. They commemorate the installations as art destinations and become trinkets to remember a place that will largely go unseen. More broadly, they earnestly look at the process of making land art and comment on the commodification of art artifacts and natural destination sites.

Pinewood Vortex will be on display from April 22, through July 6, 2021.
