Inside & Out
3rd Annual Art History Graduate Symposium

The Art History graduate students announce their 3rd Annual Art History Graduate Symposium “Inside & Out: Architectural Space and Construction of Self.”

Architecture is a fundamental component in both the construction of physical environments and the shaping of individual subjectivities. From the more intimate scale of interior spaces to the broader context of urban landscapes, the built environment profoundly influences how we understand and navigate the world, as well as how we negotiate and articulate our identities. Speakers will explore the relationship between architectural space and the formation of selfhood, considering how built environments might shape, reflect, and challenge individual and collective identities.

Speakers
Alia Kalla (Art History), “Imagining the Orient, Asserting the Self: The Politics and Psychology of Turquerie in Eighteenth-Century Fontainebleau”

Aida Omrani (Community Development), “Designing Inclusive Parks for Teenage Girls: Creating a Sense of Belonging”

Grace Wu (Art History), “Project[ing] Empire: Jiang Tingxi’s Paintings and Poetry Devoted to the Countless Fragrant Flowers”
