Professor Burnett publishes new book on collector Pang Yuanji
Professor Katharine Burnett, Art History, and faculty director, Global Tea Initiative for the Study of Tea Culture and Science Chinese Art and Culture, is the author of Shaping Chinese Art History: Pang Yuanji and His Painting Collection which has just been released by Cambria Press.
This is the first study that takes a close look at Pang’s collection comparing it to a selection of contemporaneous private collectors. It shows how their tastes and interests were all shaped by the same Qing canon, and more broadly, it explains that Pang did not merely absorb this canon, but then also purposefully and systematically used it and his collection to protect China’s traditions into an uncertain future.
This book is in the Cambria Sinophone World Series, headed by Victor Mair (University of Pennsylvania) and includes color images.
