Professor Burnett discusses cultural exchange and tea culture in public lecture
Katharine Burnett, professor of art history, will give the Ellen Bayard Weedon Lecture at the Fralin Museum of Art in the University of Virginia in November. Her lecture “Art History without the Art: The Curious Case of Sino-Vietnamese Teapots before 1700″ explores the exchange of tea culture and teapots between China and Vietnam between 1300–1700, a time when steeped tea became the norm and teapots began to be a required form. Burnett examines how Vietnam responded to this trade with its Chinese neighbor and why the teapot is curiously absent from the Vietnamese ceramic industry.
Professor Burnett’s lecture will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 5 pm at the Fralin Museum of Art, University of Virginia. This lecture will not be recorded.
