Alum explores the world through “The Eyes of a Goat”

Why did artists start raising two goats? To create a open, transparent center where people gather and interact with one another – and with goats.

Alum Naoto (John) Tanaka (B.A., art history and international agricultural development, ’16) worked on a project that explored the meaning of community and art-making in a COVID world. The group exhibition “The Eyes of a Goat” is an Initiative by Tokyo University of the Arts and Citizens of Toride City to raise goats on the art campus in a project that is “Han-nō Han-gei,” literally half-agriculture – half-art.” ”The Eyes of a Goat” project began on December 6, 2020, when two goats, Mugi and Ehime, arrived at the Toride Campus of Tokyo University of the Arts. The isolation that resulted with the COVID pandemic revealed a great need for social interaction which the goat “partners.”
