Chowenhill:crush for Amplified Viola
A multiyear commissioning project that is modeled after
Cher’s decades-long farewell tours, Kurt Rohde’s Farewell
Tour—Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6—commissions new works
by the most gifted composers who, Rohde feels, are
underrepresented and deserve a wider audience, while also
broadening the repertoire for viola. His project’s anticipated
year of completion is 2028, at which time he will retire from
playing in performance and donate his instrument to some
talented whippersnapper who wants to play viola.
Violist and composer Kurt Rohde says he’s
planning to hang up his instrument in 2028, which might not
seem especially imminent. But he’s determined to use that time
to make things better for the violists who come after him.
Richard Chowenhill is an award-winning composer and guitarist.
His music has been performed across North America by the Lydian
String Quartet, the Talujon Percussion Ensemble, the Beat City
Percussion Ensemble, the Wellesley Composers Conference
Orchestra, Music from China, members of the UC Davis Symphony
Orchestra, members of the UC Davis Early Music Ensemble, the
Davis Shakespeare Ensemble, and numerous other soloists and
ensembles. Originally from California, he has performed as a
guitar player in numerous California-based bands and chamber
ensembles.
