Professor Watenpaugh to give public lecture at Rice University

On April 5, Professor Heghnar Watenpaugh will present “From Genocide to Justice: The Modern Life of a Medieval Manuscript” at the Department of Art History at Rice University. Her presentation, which will be online and open to the public, will be moderated by Farshid Emami, professor of art history at Rice University.

Professor Watenpaugh investigates the biography of a medieval Armenian Gospels manuscript, where art history intersects with cultural heritage and painful histories of genocide and migration. Eight of the manuscript’s illuminated pages were discovered in the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2010, prompting a lawsuit. The tale of the separation of the pages from the manuscript tells a story of destruction and survival, and makes the case for a human right to art.

This event begins at 1:00 pm CST and Zoom registration is required.
