Rachel Deane Installation in Sacramento

MFA student (MFA 2019) Rachel Deane has a new site-specific installation, “To Circle Shame and Doubt,” at The Garage on the Grove in Sacramento.

A complexly saturated landscape by Deane, her immersive installations originate on the wall and grow outward, creating tension between the history of painting and the occupation of space. She utilizes traditional painting materials alongside soft sculpture to build a web that connects art history, craft, dating culture, cinema, and folklore.

On Oct. 20 at 6 p.m., this installation includes an endurance performance from 6-9 pm, which introduces ideas of dedication and obsession to the work. Another performance is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.

Rachel Deane, born in Atlanta, Georgia, is an artist who uses materials, techniques, and histories from painting to create three-dimensional environments. These environments deploy the use of intricate pattern, repetitive shape, bold color, and ornamentation in order to create density that encourages viewer exploration. Deane writes modern-day folklores that examine dating culture, female sexuality, and trauma, which she uses as source material. She engages directly with the characters she writes, often assuming their identity and makes from their point-of-view.
