LECTURER POSITIONS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN 2017-2018

Position Description:

Temporary lecturer positions for various courses in the Department of Design which may include history/theory/criticism, sustainability, visual communication, digital media, lighting, interior architecture, exhibition, fashion, industrial/product and textiles. The Department of Design at UC Davis is unique within the University of California system and presents itself as a global model for design education with a research focus.

Applicants must have professional experience in a related design field for which an application is submitted.

Appointment Date:

Several appointments are made each year. Expanded course descriptions for courses that may be available are available upon individual request. The number of courses assigned for each appointment varies depending on type of course and percentage of appointment.

The service dates are listed below:

Fall Quarter: September 25 – December 15, 2017
Winter Quarter: January 5 – March 23, 2018
Spring Quarter: March 29 – June 14, 2018

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach one or more undergraduate studio and/or lecture courses in the Design major. Teaching may also involve field trips, exhibitions, special projects and guest speakers. Candidates may be asked to teach l-6 courses for the year depending on programmatic need and candidate’s availability. The percentage of appointment depends on the type and number of courses assigned. The following courses could be offered for the 2017-2018 year pending available funding:

DES 14: Design Drawing
DES 15: Form and Color
DES 16: Graphic Design and Computer Technology
DES 21: Drafting and Perspective
DES 37: Coding for Designers
DES 50: Introduction to 3-Dimensional Design
DES 77: Introduction to Structural Design for Fashion
DES 115: Letterforms and Typography
DES 116: Visual Communication: Graphic Design Studio
DES117: Interactive Media
DES132A: Textile Design: Woven Structures
DES 151: Type In Motion
DES 170: Experimental Fashion and Textile Design
DES191 A-D: Workshop in Design (variable topics including industrial/product design, interactive design, design for social impact, design research)

Qualifications:

Appropriate professional degree; e.g., MFA, MArch., MA, etc., or equivalent training and professional experience.

Demonstrated teaching ability and experience. A developing record of creative, scholarly, or professional achievement in an area of expertise related to the subject area described in this announcement.

Salary and Appointment Level:           

Commensurate with experience and course assignment.
