Student Profile

Colin Johnson
Performance Studies

Colin Johnson was raised in northern California. After a circuitous stint as a songwriter in Los Angeles, a middle-school science and computer teacher for 6 years, and a PhD practice-run in ritual theory and new media at Graduate Theological Union and UC Berkeley respectively, he is happy to be part of the PFS family at Davis. Colin’s work is interested in the micro-training of bodies through architectures both physical and virtual, theorizing avatars and space in game worlds, and troubling the borders in/of procedural systems.

Current Activities

Colin is a first year PhD student in Performance Studies at UC Davis. Last November he presented a paper at the American Academy of Religion entitled “The Ritual-as-Game: Avatars and the Circling of Space.” He also enjoys questionable online activities, protecting synthetic earths from virtual invasions, imagining other worlds into being with his 2 1/2 year old son, and conversing over strong coffee with friends.
