The exhibition features traditional textiles from Africa, Asia
and South America collected by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus
of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. These items
have inspired contemporary design works by UC Davis students that
are also showcased, highlighting the continuing relevance of
traditional cultures and how they drive design thinking in new

The UC Davis MFA in Design unites theory and practice. This
two-year program encourages an interdisciplinary
approach with emphases on socially responsible,
human-centered, and sustainable design practice.
Jo Ann C. Stabb, professor emeritus design 1968-2002 and founder
of the UC Davis Design Collection which is named after her,
recently returned to campus for “Shape Up: Case Studies in
Fashion Making” at the Design Museum.
Dolph Gotelli, professor
emeritus of Design 1970-2006, has been an avid collector of
antiques such as toys, ethnographic folk art and masks, textiles,
figurines, and holiday décor for more than 50 years. On Oct.
25 and 26, hundreds of pieces from his collection will be
available at a special collector’s sale.
