The following obituary was written by Elin Diamond, professor of
English and director of the Graduate Program in Comparative
Literature at Rutgers University. Diamond, who specializes in
feminist criticism and dramatic theory, earned her doctorate and
master’s degree at UC Davis.
Renowned theater scholar and Beckett specialist Ruby Cohn, a
professor of comparative drama at the University of California,
Davis, died Oct. 18 following a prolonged struggle with
Parkinson’s disease. She was 89 and lived in San Francisco.
The UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance presents Tom
Stoppard’s absurdist comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are
Dead from Nov. 17 to Dec. 3 in Main Theatre.
The production is the second and final work to be directed by
fall Granada Artist-in-Residence Michael Barakiva at UC Davis.
Barakiva previously directed the devised Sideshow Lab workshop

and directed by John Zibell, Master of Fine Arts directing

multi-dimensional piece is inspired by Herman Melville’s
Moby-Dick. Like the novel, it is about perspective
and multiculturalism.Unlike the novel, it is set in the present
and investigates the disappearance of the human animal from the
natural landscape.The Moby-Dick Variations opens
