In Boston-based ensemble Ehnahre, we aim to rethink and redefine what chamber music, metal, and extreme music can be. Our vision also includes a pedagogical element: we seek to heighten awareness of the vast compositional possibilities provided by our instruments both acoustic and amplified. While some of these are well known in the new music scene, many are idiomatic to other musical subcultures from which we take inspiration. Expressive and technical resources like overdrive, distortion, delays, compression, microtonal techniques, high and low gain timbres, scordaturas, extended vocal techniques, and the unique orchestrational paradigm created by skillful merging of traditional instruments (piano, contrabass, percussion) with electronically augmented instruments (electric guitar, electric bass, live-processed drum kit), radically expand tools for composed or improvised music of all kinds.
