CDM 189: Special Topics in Cinema & Digital Media: Not Acting, Being
Creating Atmospheres and Showing Stories without Telling Them: The film techniques of Robert Bresson and Angela Schanelec.
Students will make short fiction pieces experimenting with the original formal and stylistic rules employed by German filmmaker Angela Schanelec and French filmmaker Robert Bresson. Students will read Robert bresson’s Notes on the Cinematograph and Bresson on Bresson. Among the films studied will be Schanelec’s films, Afternoon, Marseille, and Orly as well as L’argent and A Man Escaped by Bresson. We will focus on directing actors or as Bresson would say, creating atmospheres for models to be.
