Design Department Launches POP UP Workshops

On February 20, 2016 and March 5, 2016, the Design Department launched its first-ever two-part series for POP UP Workshops, professional development workshops led by Design Department alumni.

The workshops were catered to prepare students for the professional world through advice regarding interviews, portfolios, branding, and more. Both POP UP Workshops consisted of proctored questions by Design Department Student Programming Coordinator, Mary Serafin as well as an open Q&A. Over 100 design students and alumni combined gathered to enjoy a day of connecting, design, and snacks.

At our February workshop, panelists came from various classes and backgrounds: Kathreen Fontecha, Xi-Li Yeh, Melody Wang, Dayee Leung, Trisha Kietikul, Vivian Ho, and Tracy Manuel. Kathreen and Xi, members of Talent Loves Us, a Bay Area networking non-profit for creatives, led a workshop for portfolio creation and resume help. Questions from the crowd tackled concepts ranging from ethical issues to recruiting companies to networking and cold emailing.

At our March workshop, alumni panelists included Rosa Chou, Arianna Azevedo, Christian Bergstrom, Randall Hom, Roselle Bernardino, and Kim Losenara.  Alumni Christian Bergstrom gave a presentation focused on interviewing and personal branding hacks. Alumni were asked questions about their influential mentors, the post-college work life balance, getting work referrals, and self studying skills needed for the jobs they want.

The POP UP workshops team would like to give a huge thank you to alumna Julie Merk and her husband Randy for generously supporting the Design Department and making this event possible.
