Alum Chris Daubert at Pence Gallery

An installation of hand-carved wooden sculptures by alumnus Chris Daubert (MFA, ’88) will be on exhibition at the Pence Gallery Oct. 6 through Nov. 29.

Daubert’s installation, “Firewood,” creates an environment in which
visitors are invited to observe multiple hand carved, wooden sculptures of solitary objects, each created out of a single piece of fire wood. Each object is illuminated from within, and then partially obscured with layers of hanging semi-transparent fabric. Viewers are left to ponder the scene of object, space, and image, in a shifting cycle of perception and reception, of illumination and darkness.

Watch Terry Peterson’s interview with Daubert in “In the Studio with Chris Daubert.”

This exhibition is sponsored by Bill and Nancy Roe. The gallery is open for admission from 11:30 AM – 5 PM, Tuesday-Sunday, and patrons must wear a mask and social distance.

A Conversation with the Artist(s), to be released on YouTube on October 9, features sculptor Terry Peterson with Daubert in his studio for a visit to talk about his new installation as it takes shape. The two artists are friends and colleagues, sharing an interest in using tech-driven visitor engagement to question our understanding of the natural world.

Daubert, an artist, author, and curator, earned both a BA and MA in art at San Jose State University. His drawings, paintings, and large-scale mixed-media installations have debuted in local and national exhibitions. His innovative artwork has appeared in countless periodicals and art catalogs and has published several art-related books, exhibition catalogs, and essays. Daubert served as the curator of the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at UC Davis, as well as at the Gregory Kondos Gallery at Sacramento City College, where he also taught art for 16 years. He co-founded the non-profit gallery ProArts in Oakland.

The Pence Gallery in the heart of downtown Davis, California is a not-for-profit art gallery. The gallery’s mission is to serve the community through offering high caliber art exhibits, supporting the development of local and regional artists including faculty and alumni from UC Davis, and providing educational programs to visitors of all ages.
