Cynthia Bates
Violin II, Principal

Cynthia Bates, longtime concertmaster, has been a member of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra since the fall of 1972. She earned a BA in Music and an MA in English as a poetry student of Karl Shapiro and Sandra Gilbert. As a founding member of the Early Music Ensemble, she played vielle, rebec, and treble viol as well as violin; with that group she toured France and England, returning to Winchester Cathedral in 1978 for performances of the EME’s much admired production of The Play of Daniel.

She has led the UCDSO’s tours of California, British Columbia, French Polynesia and Australia, and France, during which the group performed at such venues as the Sydney Opera House, the Conservatoire de Paris, and the Sorbonne. Bates is employed at UCD as Lecturer for the University Writing Program and as Director of the Entry Level Writing Program. In addition to playing music and teaching, favorite activities include writing poetry; hiking; traveling; and studying wildlife and geothermal features in Yellowstone National Park.
