Students and Alumni Work Together at Davis Shakespeare Festival

UC Davis students and alumni are working alongside each other at this summer’s Davis Shakespeare Festival.

Charlie Lavaroni, student in the Department of Theatre and Dance, is appearing in various roles in the musical comedy “On the 20th Century” which is directed by the festival’s co-artistic director Gia Battista, a Theatre and Dance alumna.

Students are found not just onstage but off as well. Pooja Morari and Sharon Zhu are both serving as assistant costume designers, while Rachel Heleva is the house manager. In addition to Battista, other alumni at the festival includes composer Richard Chowenhill and musician Victor Nava. University staff member James Cubbage is an assistant stage manager.

The 2018 Davis Shakespeare Festival summer season includes the Tony award-winning “On the 20th Century” with music by Cy Coleman and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green based on plays by Charles Bruce Millholland and Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. It performs in repertory with Peter Oswald’s translation of Friedrich Schiller’s “Mary Stuart.” The festival’s summer season runs through August 5 at the Veterans Memorial Theater in Davis.
