TEMPORARY LECTURER POSITION IN THE ART STUDIO PROGRAM 2017-2018
CERAMICS

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of California, Davis, invites applications for a lecturer position in the Art Studio Program to teach in the area of CERAMICS, during the 2017-2018 academic year. Classes will include ART 8, Introduction to Ceramic Sculpture during Fall quarter, ART 142B, Clay, Glaze, Kiln, and 142C, Ceramics and the Painted Surface at the Intermediate level, during Winter and Spring quarters.

A lecturer teaches a three-hour studio class twice a week and holds regular office hours for his or her students. The candidate must be able to combine technical instruction with conceptual and historical content that takes advantage of her or his strengths, interests and background. Qualifications include an MFA and teaching experience beyond the TA level.

The courses introduces art studio concentration in building sculpture out of clay. Students will gain an understanding of the material and processes inherent in the medium. These courses include large scale hand-building in clay, making clay, making and altering glaze, along with gas and electric kiln loading, and firing, as well as advanced techniques, including slip casting. Discussions around projects include historical and conceptual ideas necessary for contemporary practice. Applicants should be artists whose primary work is ceramic sculpture and possess a deep understanding of the material with expertise in building; glaze making, glazing and surface articulation techniques at all firing ranges; and gas kiln firing. Applicants must be current practicing artists.

This is a non-tenured, temporary position: the appointments to the title of Lecturer are self-terminating (no further notice on non-reappointment will be forthcoming) and do not create an obligation on the part of the University either to extend or renew the appointment outlined above. Any reappointment will be preceded by an assessment. Proof of citizenship or eligibility for US employment required prior to employment (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986).

This position is subject to UC policy and is covered by a collective bargaining unit.
