FACULTY POSITION IN FILMMAKING – CINEMA & DIGITAL MEDIA PROGRAM

The Program in Cinema and Digital Media at the University of California at Davis (CDM) invites applications for a faculty position in Filmmaking. The major in Cinema and Digital Media connects critical, historical and practical approaches to a range of media – including studies and production of gaming, animation, film/television/video, electronics, and music/sound. Students study filmmaking – progressing from beginning to advanced levels – within the context of a broader study of digital media and culture. Faculty participate in undergraduate teaching while also mentoring students in graduate programs across the University such as Performance Studies and Cultural Studies.

We are seeking a candidate with an active practice, exhibition record, and recognized profile as a filmmaker. While we will consider candidates from a range of specializations (including fiction, experimental, documentary, and hybrid film production), our search will prioritize candidates qualified to teach and develop our major’s Narrative Filmmaking course offerings. Experience with new directions in motion picture practice, including web series, interactive, and VR film platform are desirable, as are scholarship and publications in film/television/media history and critical studies.

With a start date of Fall 2017, the position is open rank and could be untenured, at the rank of assistant professor, or tenured at the rank of associate or full professor. For exceptional candidates with an active professional film production practice, the program will consider reduced time appointments, down to 50%, to allow more time for continued professional work. If this is of interest, please indicate so in your cover letter.  The campus and the CDM program are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the field of filmmaking and to the academic community through their creative work, research, teaching, and service.

Applicants should have received (or be about to receive) an appropriate terminal degree, either an MFA or equivalent in film production or a doctoral degree in a related field. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in creative production and a commitment to quality teaching. Candidates at the Associate or Full level should have a strong record of film production, fundraising and exhibition, as appropriate, proven leadership skills in collaborative research or production efforts, and an excellent teaching record. Successful applicants will be expected to establish a top-quality film production program and to teach undergraduate and possibly graduate courses. The program is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students.

Interested persons should apply using the instructions given at: https://recruit.ucdavis.edu/apply/JPF01292.

Applications should include a vita including filmography, a personal statement, and links to a selection of production work (please include a short portfolio of short works or excerpts up to 15 minutes in total length and provide links to full completed works as well), a selection of critical writing, a diversity statement, a teaching statement, and contact information for four references. Review of completed applications will begin December 15, 2016. The position remains open until filled.
