Lecturer Robin L. Gray Passes

It is with great sadness, David Grenke, chair of the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance, announced the death of colleague and friend Robin L. Gray, who passed away on October 18. Robin joined the department in 2009, and quickly infused the students and the department with her special brand of professionalism, passion and humor.

Born In Indiana and raised in Ohio, Robin graduated from Kent State University, and then went on to a world-class and varied professional career as a stage manager and production manager across the continent. In her four decades of work, she helmed national touring productions, off-Broadway shows, cruise line productions, and the Gay Games at NYC’s Yankee Stadium. She was a favored stage manager to many stars through the years including Jose Ferrer, Hugh Jackman and David Copperfield. She eventually moved from New York to Sacramento, where she brought her expertise and passion locally to Capitol Stage Company, B Street Theatre, Sacramento Theater Company, Sacramento Opera and California Musical Theatre. She was well known for her quick wit, unparalleled storytelling and unending devotion to friends, colleagues and students. Her love of all things theatrical was infectious, and her teaching, mentoring and guidance of UC Davis students has helped create and shape a new generation of theater artists.

She is survived by her wife, Kristin Tucker, her father, Max Fenton Gray, sisters, Dawn Gail Owen and Heather Jean Ruthven, as well as brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews she cherished.

There will be “A Showcase of the Work of Robin Gray” on Sunday, Dec 10 at 5 p.m. in the Main Theatre of Wright Hall.
