John Iacovelli, professor of theatre and dance at UC Davis, is scenic designer for Luis Valdez’s “Valley of the Heart” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

Scheduled to run Oct. 30 through Dec. 9, the play centers on the Yamaguchis and the Montaños, two immigrant families, struggling to build a future for their American-born children during the Great Depression on their shared farmland. But as their oldest children fall in love—secretly—the attack on Pearl Harbor throws the two families into turmoil. When the Yamaguchis are interned, allegiances are tested, heroes are made, and the two young lovers must find a way to stay loyal to each other—and their country.
