Ananda “Nandi” Cohen-Aponte is an Assistant Professor of History of Art at Cornell University with a focus on the visual culture of colonial Latin America. She has published numerous articles and essays on issues of cross-cultural exchange, identity, and anti-colonial movements. Her recent book, Heaven, Hell, and Everything in Between: Murals of the Colonial Andes (University of Texas Press, 2016), explores the intersections between art, politics, religion, and society in mural paintings located in colonial churches across the southern Andes. She is currently conducting research on a new project that explores the role of the visual arts in fomenting an insurgent imaginary in late 18thcentury Peru and Bolivia within a context of inter-ethnic conflict and rebellion.
Co-sponsored the Hemispheric Institute of the Americas and the Art History Program.
