Margaret Laurena Kemp Appears in Sacramento Production

Margaret Laurena Kemp, associate professor of Theatre and Dance, is appearing in the B Street Theatre’s production of The Christians. Running Jan. 11 through Feb. 11 as part of the theatre’s B3 Series, the drama examines faith in America and the challenge of changing one’s mind.

Ten years ago, Pastor Paul’s church was a modest storefront. Now it houses thousands, with a coffee shop in the lobby and a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool. But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundation of his congregation’s beliefs. Backed by a live choir, The Christians is both epic and unexpectedly intimate, an unflinching look at faith in America — and its power to unite or divide.

According to Kemp, “As an artist actor who loves language and is curious about voice and speech and how they function to reveal character this is s dream role. Each performance features a community choir. This very modern play takes us back to the roots western theatre where the audience went to hear plays. This play has Antigone in its bones and the Wooster Group in it flesh. Its part of the B3 Series which is dedicated to presenting challenging theatre.”"

“Lucas Hnath’s softly mesmerizing drama about a schism that arises in an evangelical megachurch. In this terrific play about the mystery of faith, and how religion can tear people apart just as it can bring them together.” — The New York Times on The Christians
