by Stacey Mastrian, soprano
Luigi Nono (1924–90) was an Italian composer, whose contemporaries included Boulez and Stockhausen. His political motivations and writing of works with serialism earned him wide-spread recognition in the 21st century. For voice, his “Canto sospeso” for soprano, alto, tenor, mixed chorus and orchestra, is one of his best-known works for voice.
Mastrian received a bachelor’s of music degree in vocal performance from The Catholic University of America, and earned an master’s in music degree in opera performance (Maryland Opera Studio) and a D.M.A. in voice performance from the University of Maryland. Her dissertation project was entitled “Selected Vocal Works by Progressive Italian Composers of the Twentieth Century: The Confluence of Nationalism & Internationalism from the Eve of World War I through Post-World War II Reconstruction.”
