A native of Fresno, California, Derek Kwan is a percussionist, composer, and computer programmer interested in the expressive capabilities of open source software, computer technology, and bringing the worlds of contemporary classical music and electronic music to a wider audience. Kwan received his bachelor’s degree in general mathematics and music performance from UC Davis, a master of arts degree in percussion performance from CUNY Queens College, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in percussion performance from Stony Brook University.
Kwan has worked as a programmer at Stony Brook University’s Teaching Learning Lab (TLL). At the TLL, he has collaborated with faculty on a wide variety of computer-related projects, including visualizing the average body positions of dance routines, transforming speech into instrument sounds, and generating graphs of chicken hierarchies. He specializes in working with computers and web technology to develop improvisatory music environments and to realize indeterminate pieces electroacoustically. He has appeared festivals that include the Bang on a Can Marathon, Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute, and New York City Electronic Music Festival. Kwan has performed with Raphael Mostel’s Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, Antonio de Vivo’s Winds of Woods, and Elevator Rose.
