Callus
Lab A Theatre
Jasmine Washington, theatre and dance undergraduate student, will share her full-length play in a reading on Wednesday, June 5 and 6. “Go and Come” will be performed in the Lab A Theatre in Wright Hall at 8 p.m. The presentation is free.
“Callus” explores the life of a young Black woman as her and her family experience systemic oppression in the form of inadequate health care. A health crisis forces the family to adapt their relationships, lifestyles, and mentalities in order to deal with the dilemma. The title stems from the tension between the necessity to create a barrier for self-preservation in a difficult world and the risk of distancing one’s self from others. This staged reading uses both realistic and abstract aesthetics to explore issues of power and privilege as we move through this family’s experiences.
Jasmine Washington is a fourth-year theatre and dance major and African and African American Studies minor. At UC Davis she has appeared in “The Briars,” “The Trojan Women,” “B More” and most recently as adult Claudia/Narrator in “The Bluest Eye.”
