Summer Session 1
Interested in the development of modern art in the twentieth century? AHI 185 covers a variety of styles crucial to our understanding of modernism, including Cubism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism.
We will be examining these movements in the context of the Mexican, Russian, and German revolutions, the Great Depression, and World Wars I and II. We will also be considering the changing role of the artist during this period.
The class will include discussions of artists’ writings, along with several opportunities to develop your visual analysis skills. There will be a short research project and two exams.
The course meets GE requirements for Arts & Humanities, Visual Literacy, and World Cultures.
There will not be any courses on modern or contemporary art history offered during academic year 2014-2015, so take advantage of this opportunity!
