Art History 163C
Painting in the People’s Republic of China

Instructor Katharine Burnett

Summer Session 1

Painting in the People’s Republic of China examines the relationship between art and politics in 20th and 21st century China, with an emphasis on the People’s Republic of China. Beginning with an examination of painting during the Opium War to the Treaty of Shimonoseki in the 19th century, we will consider how the visual arts became central to the cultural policies and expressions of political practices of modern China. Themes include the fate of traditional-style ink painting, the integration of non-Chinese media and painting styles, changing political environments, the relationship between official and non-official art styles, and counter-revolutionary art. Painting will be the primary focus, but we will also discuss the role of other media including printmaking, photography, sculpture, and performance.
