UC Davis Alumni at Verge Center for the Arts
Two UC Davis graduates have exhibitions at the Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento: “Windows” by Mathew Zefeldt and “(This is Not a) Love Song” by Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor. The shows open with a reception Sept. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. and continue through Oct. 16.
Zefeld (MFA, 2011) creates paintings influenced by the multi-tasking nature and imagery of contemporary culture. An assistant professor of painting and drawing at the University of Minnesota, he has had solo shows at Circuit 12 in Dallas, Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Skinner Howard Gallery in Sacramento, Michael Rosenthal Gallery in San Francisco, and Swarm Gallery in Oakland.
O’Connor (MFA, 2005) makes colossal sculptures reminiscent of stuffed animals from quilts, sheets and other domestic textiles. The Sacramento-based artist has shown extensively in California, in group exhibitions at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin, the John Elder Gallery and CUE Arts Foundation in New York City and had solo exhibitions at the Charlie James Gallery and David Salow Gallery in Los Angeles, the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery.
The exhibitions are being held in conjunction with the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis opening in November.
O’Connor will give a talk Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
Verge is at 625 S St. Admission is free.
