Faculty and Students Win awards for transformable fabric

Enfold fabric.Stylish clothes designed and created by Jason Lin.

The A’ Design Award and Competition has announced that Helen S. Koo, assistant professor of design, Jason Lin, design student, and Jasmine Zhou, electrical and computer engineering student, have won A’Awards for Enfold: Smart Transformation Transformable fabric. Their creation was developed in the Fashion Design and Technology Lab (FT Lab).

Enfold is a transformable smart textiles applied cloth that folds and envelops the wearer using origami folding with shape memory alloy (SMA) to assist those who have trouble dressing by allowing the garment to wrap around and fit the wearer without outside help. These types of clothes are expected to be beneficial for people with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and also for populations with other body movement disorders and elderly people.

In addition, Jason Lin submitted two of his garments created for the Signature Collections class and won two awards (Gold and Bronze) in the student category.

A’ Design Award and Competitions are organized and awarded annually and internationally in a wide range of categories. Every year, projects that focus on innovation, technology, design and creativity are awarded with the A’ Award. While realized projects find opportunities to get published, reach new markets and meet a wide range of buyers for their existing products, the organization also helps the creative minds and startups to meet with the business people to realize their product ideas.
